Birding in Texas
A very special birding excursion is held in July annually. On the Texas border, in warm Gulf of Mexico waters, and throughout the Lower Rio Grande Valley, the annual Brownsville International Birding Festival offers nature lovers a complete program of field trips, seminars, and talks that explores the biodiversity of south Texas and northern Mexico.
A series of field trips offer participants a wide choice of birding opportunities, from pelagic trips in the deep waters of the Gulf, to canoe trips on the Rio Grande. The historic King Ranch and a Mexican
option to Rancho Rincon de Anacahuitas are among trip destinations as well as exploring the shores of the Laguna Madre by boat in search of many-colored butterflies.
Texas offers some of the best birding opportunities the world over with its rich biodiversity and coastal wetlands. From the giant whooping cranes to rare breeds of sparrows and swallows, South Texas and the entire Coastal plains of the Lone Star state offer outstanding opportunity to view nature at its most colorful and at its best.
If you miss the international festival because it takes place the wrong time of the year, take heart, the winter season in South Texas brings just as many seasonal varieties of bird species as any other time of year. There will still be plenty to see when you arrive! Happy birding!
