gulf shrimp fiesta 2004
Shrimp Lovers Rejoice...Shrimp Season Opens...and there is no better way to open any season than with a great big party!
As the Texas shrimp season gets underway, a traditional fiesta now in it's 6th year is set to open the season. "Gulf Shrimp Fiesta 2004"will be held this year on Saturday, July 31 At Dean Porter Park in Brownsville, from 10:00 A.M. - 10:00 P.M.
The fiesta, while becoming a fun event for the community has an educational purpose as well, to raise the awareness of the plight of the shrimping industry and it's workers. The events proceeds go towards scholarships for young adults involved with the shrimping industry, raising Thousands of much needed dollars each year. The outcome of this years' catch in particular will be a deciding factor for many. After generations of shrimping some may have to find a new vocation. A sad situation for the state, the industry, shrimp lovers, and most of all the shrimpers who love their work and life on the sea. The economics of the shrimping industry have been hit hard from many sides, asian competition, farm raised shrimp, rock-bottom prices and increased government regulations have all taken their toll.
The Shrimping Industry pumps an average of $60 million dollars a year into the area's economy, and indirectly contributes to the creation of thousands of jobs throughout the county. Home to over 190 shrimp boats, the shrimp harvest at the Port of Brownsville and in Port Isabel places the region fifth highest overall in the United States. As a world-class facility, it boasts all conceivable services vital to the shrimping industry. The Brownsville shrimp fleet, along with that of Port Isabel, makes the area the Shrimp Capital of the United States.
The Gulf Shrimp Fiesta opens with the official blessing of the fleet and needless to say everyone is hoping for a bountiful season. Festival events include a shrimp cook-off, shrimp peeling and eating contest, food booths, arts and crafts marketplace, kiddie carnival, pony rides and games, " Zoo Ambassadors" from the Gladys Porter Zoo will be there for fun and educational presentations. Also the International USAC Autosound competition, car show and continuous entertainment and live music will be staged throughout the day.
Go with an empty stomach.... a yearning for shrimp and eat your fill!
