Mardi Gras! Galveston 2003
Mardi Gras, the traditional festival of feasting and merrymaking that precedes the season of Lent, has been publicly observed on Galveston Island as early as 1867 and later revived in 1985 by Galveston-born preservationist and developer George P. Mitchell.
The island city expects a tropical invasion during its 19th annual festival (since revival), which celebrates The Rain Forests of the World. The merry-making centers on The Strand, Galveston's historic district, where elaborate parades, masked balls, festive music and special events draw revelers far and wide.
With more than 75 events, including a fun-filled entertainment district, eight colorful parades and processions, elaborate balls and parties, plus exciting exhibits and sporting events, it promises to be the best Mardi Gras! Galveston ever!
The Mystic Krewe of Aquarius was organized in March of 1985 to celebrate the revival of Mardi Gras festivities on Galveston Island. When the City of Galveston decided to extend the annual Mardi Gras celebration to two weeks, the krewe joined into the Mardi Gras revelry by presenting the Mardi Gras Kickoff Parade. The first of several Parades kicks off Saturday, February 22, at Noon.
This year's celebration features more than 50 bands, 9 exciting parade processions, 15 elaborate masquerade balls, a culinary salute, and much, much, more, Mardi Gras! Galveston 2003 is a spectacle that simply can't be missed!
