Without a doubt, the Glen Miller Orchestra is considered to be one of America's favorite Big Bands, and Corpus Christi fans on the famous orchestra are gearing up for a "concert to remember" on Feb. 12, a patriotic salute to America on Abraham Lincoln's birthday.
Sixty years after he lost his life while serving his country in World War II, Glenn Miller's recorded performances stand as testimony to his talents - and, by many different yardsticks, his music remains quite popular and entertaining.
Fans have been Steppin' Out to the memorable sounds of the Glenn Miller Orchestra since June 6, 1956. The World Famous, Glenn Miller Orchestra, is the most popular and sought after big band in the world today for both concert and swing dance engagements. With its unique jazz sound, the Glenn Miller Orchestra is considered to be one of the greatest bands of all time. The present Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 and has been touring consistently since, playing an average of 300 live dates a year all around the world. Trombonist Larry O'Brien is the orchestra's present musical director. Patriotic favorites will be chosen from the following: America The Beautiful, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Stars & Stripes Forever; When Johnny Comes Marching Home, The American Patrol, The Star Spangled Banner; Anchors Aweigh, The Marine Hymn, Your Flag and Mine, You're a Grand Old Flag; God Bless America, Bugle Call Rag, The Caisson Song. And the concert will also include your favorites to be selected from: In The Mood, Tuxedo Junction, Moonlight Serenade, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Little Brown Jug, I Know Why, A String of Pearls, Kalamazoo.
The Orchestra's Corpus Christi performance will be well attended by visiting Winter Texans who often lend their support to the nostalgia of the Big Band movement and to the patriotic theme of this special concert.
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is staging the event as part of their 2007-2008 Furgason Bravo! Series of live performances. The event will be held at the University's Performing Arts Center on campus.
