Get ready to celebrate the fruits of the Valley this weekend when the annual Texas Citrus Fiesta kicks off in Mission with more events, a bigger parade, much pageantry, and a whole lot of fruit and fun on tap in the biggest celebration of Texas citrus in the world...

The legacy of the Rio Grande Valley includes a great deal of pioneering history, from the days of Spanish explorers and Catholic missions to the short-lived but glorious days of the thriving Texas Republic. But in modern times the Valley is probably most recognized as an agriculture wonderland where, thanks to our subcortical climate, fruits, vegetables and wildflowers grow year round.

Leading the way and setting the standard for famous Valley agriculture is the Texas citrus industry. And the Texas Citrus Fiesta in Mission is the undisputed leading event that celebrates the fruit industry heritage of our region.

Full of pomp and pageantry, this annual winter event celebrates the citrus heritage of the Valley and offers multiple events designed to bring recognition to the industry that helped put the Valley on the map.

The culmination of the Citrus Fiesta happens this weekend when over 100,000 enthusiasts gather on the streets of Mission to watch one of the most unique parades in the world, the fabled Parade of Oranges, which features floats covered with oranges and varied agricultural products grown in the Valley. The parade is enjoyed by a multitude of spectators from the United States, Mexico and Canada, making it an international event. Floats are built and decorated by civic organizations, churches, businesses and schools, and represent a true community effort for the enjoyment of those who gather to take part in the sites, sounds and flavors of the Texas citrus industry.

Another notable event associated with the Fiesta is the Product Costume Show, where dresses and costumes are made of oranges. Yes - oranges are just one of the many local products that contestants use in the design of costumes for this unique fashion show. Marvel at the ingenuity and imagination of the contestants and their talents as they present their costumes for public review. The Product Fashion Show takes place Saturday night (Jan. 26) at Mission's Neuhaus Gym.

Other events include the parade, staged in downtown Mission Sunday, Jan. 27, shortly after noon; a Fiesta Fun Fair; Vaquero cookoff; the Texas Citrus Youth Show; and the crowning of King Citrus.
