There are rodeos and then there are redeos. Let me explain. About two centuries ago somebody probably bet somebody else they could stay on a bucking bronc longer than the other fellow and the idea of cowboy competition got its start.
You don't have to look far today to find a first class modern day version of a good rodeo in your neighborhood, fair park or on the cable television at home. Just about everybody knows about the high dollar stakes and fancy hoopla of commercial rodeo. Not that there's anything wrong with it.
But if you weant to taste the golden days of rodeo you need to head out to Amarillo to take in the Cowboy Roundup and Chuckwagon Roundup scheduled the week of June. Forget the fancy belt buckles and glorified clowns, this is ranch rodeo at its finest, a competition between ranches that has been raging in one for or another for better than 200 years.
Such noted ranches as the Baca Ranch from Vega, Texas; the Bell Ranch in Bell Ranch, New Mexico; the Bravo Ranch, Tule Ranch, High Card Ranch and others, are competiting agaisnt each ther to claim the annual honors of having the toughest cowboys and the meanest stock. It rodeo like you've never seen before!
It's all part of the Coors Ranch Rodeo being held in conjunction with the Chuckwagon Roundup where chuckwagons and their owners come from all across the nation to compete in a chuckwagon cook off. Now here's the place to get some real trail grub. From creative trail dishes to great chili and concoctions full of unknown surprises, you can find some of thebest treats ever made in the great outdoors.
A huge western gear show and sale always runs concurrent with the cowboy blowout providing plenty to do for every member of the family. And each night, after the rodeo performance, a dance is staged featuring live music and hony tonk tunes.
It all happens June 1-3 at the Tri-State Fairgrounds in Amarillo.
Cowboy Roundup, USA, now in its twentieth year, is dedicated to preserving the Ranching Heritage of Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle. The organization endeavors to educate the general public, in the spirit of our ranching ancestry and the lifestyle of the great American Cowboy, by hosting an annual celebration. Funds generated by the event, planned for June 1 and 2, will enable Cowboy Roundup, USA to profile many aspects of the ranching way of life through a ranch rodeo and chuck wagon gathering.
The events will be introduced by World Champion and Hall of Fame announcer Bob Tallman; they will be broadcast to national television by "America's Horse." Recognitions will include the "Rancher of the Year" honoree and the "World Champion Chuck wagon". The Coors Ranch Rodeo has been witnessed by the largest spectator attendance at any rodeo event in Amarillo. The celebration attracts up to 25,000 enthusiastic supporters to the Tri-State Exposition.
