Full of art, culture and music, Dallas remains one of the Lone Star State's premiere destinations. From arts & entertainment to outdoor fun, BIG D has it all. Get ready for "big" Texas fun!
It's hard to imagine a Texas without Dallas. In many ways, Big D is at the heart and soul of the Lone Star State. Ask anybody. They'll tell you "fast cars, big money, lots of art and culture," that's what Dallas is about.
Of course, in reality, Dallas is so much more than that. While historical Dallas certainly worked its way on to the map as a center of business and commerce, modern Dallas is sophisticated and full of surprises - large and small. Sports is big business in Dallas. So is fashion.
For the visitor, there's something to do and something to see on practically every corner. Visit Southern Methodist University, where you will tour the Meadows Museum, which features a permanent collection of paintings, drawings and prints from 15-20th Century Spain.
Head back towards downtown for a tour of The Sixth Floor Museum, which
allows you to view all perspectives on the events surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Next stop is Dallas’ Arts District. Dallas has more than 160 museums, galleries and artistic attractions and our Arts District is one of the largest in the United States. As you drive through, see if you can spot the sculptures on the streets - unique and sometimes whimsical, they are always of interest. Stop for a brisk walk through the Dallas Museum of Art and then head to Fair Park - site of the State Fair of Texas. Fair Park is a National Historic Landmark and houses the largest collection of 1930s Art Deco architecture in the United States.
Looking for family recreation? Texas stadium is home to the Dallas Cowboys, and always a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon in the fall. The Texas Rangers, the Dallas Mavericks and other professional teams offer plenty for the sports-minded. Six Flags in nearby Arlington is another way to waste away a day.
Round up the gang and head for Down-town Dallas. Near the Dallas Convention Center is where it all began for the Texas cowboy pioneer spirit. Located in Pioneer Plaza (appropriately named) are 50 larger than life bronze cattle and three Texas cowboys depicting the cattle drives which traveled the Shawnee Trail at this very location over 100 years ago.
A trip to Dallas would not be complete without a visit to the world’s most famous ranch of all – Southfork! See how Dallas became famous as you visit the location where the award-winning television series "Dallas" was filmed. On property resides the Ewing Mansion, the Dallas Museum, a tram tour of the property, several gift shops, Miss Ellie’s Deli and in the evenings, a true chuckwagon supper for all to enjoy.
You will not want to miss the Mesquite Championship Rodeo just minutes from Downtown Dallas. Every Friday and Saturday evening running April through September, true Texas cowboys and cowgirls from North America compete for big Texas dollars in this weekly event.
