Where else can you watch pig races, take part in a world champion corny dog eating contest and see live music every day for a month? And that's just a start at the Texas State Fair, which kicks off at the end of this month for nearly four weeks of fun, entertainment, food and excitement - Texas style!
Following last year’s second-most successful run in Fair history, organizers predict the 2007 lineup of food and fun will produce “another one” for the record books. The fair is set to run Sept. 28 - Oct 21 at the 277-acre Texas State Fair Grounds, or Fair park, in Dallas, the same park that is the year-round home of the Music Hall, Cotton Bowl and eight museums. Fair Park is also a National Historic Landmark and boasts the largest collection of art deco exposition buildings in the United States.
The first State Fair to be held in Dallas was presented at this same location in 1886. Fair Park was the site of the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition which ran for six months and attracted 6 million people. An extended 31-day Fair in 1986 celebrated the Texas Sesquicentennial and drew almost 4 million visitors.
This year's fair once again will draw astounding numbers of exhibitors, fairgoers and livestock. Livestock entries alone will top the 8,000 mark while Creative Arts entries will number around 7,000.
The fair also boasts of some 370,000 square feet of exhibit space, an overly-large carnival and amusement ride section and the Texas Star, which at 212 feet, is the largest Ferris wheel in North America.
